Why Is My Craigslist Post Not Showing Up?
Most Craigslist posts that seem to be missing are one of five things: still inside Craigslist's own delay (it says new posts can take "30 minutes or longer" to appear), held for manual review, waiting on email or phone verification, flagged and removed, or simply not matching the search you're using. Craigslist publishes all five. "Ghosting", where a post looks live to you and nobody else can find it, is the one it never defines, and it's the last thing to suspect, not the first.
So work down this page in order. It starts with the free checks and ends with the network, because a new IP fixes none of the first five.
First, rule out the delay
How long does it take for a post to show up on Craigslist?
Craigslist's contact page says "it may take 30 minutes or longer for new posts to appear." If you posted ten minutes ago, there's nothing to diagnose yet. Give it an hour before you change anything.
Is Craigslist having issues right now?
Craigslist doesn't run a public status page that we could find. The quick test is whether other new posts in your category are appearing. If they are and yours isn't, the problem is specific to your post.
Check that you're searching the right way
Why can't I find my own post in search?
Craigslist's my posting FAQ gives three checks: search in the correct geographic area and category, make sure your search words appear in the title, attributes or description, and remember that "craigslist only uses exact matching in searches." Searching "sofa" won't find a post titled "couch".
How do I find my post another way?
- Log in to your account and select "all postings" to see everything you've created, then click "display" on the one you want.
- Open the link in your receipt or confirmation email.
- Search the listings with the exact words from your title, in the area and category you posted to.
Why does my post show in my account but not in the listings?
Either it's still within the delay, it's held, it needs verifying, or it's been removed. The status shown in your account is the first clue, so read it before trying anything else.
Held for review, or waiting on verification
What does "hold" status mean on Craigslist?
From Craigslist's hold FAQ: "Postings may be held temporarily for manual review by craigslist staff." There's good news in the same answer: new posts held for review "will generally be top-posted upon approval", so waiting doesn't bury them. Reload the post to check its status rather than reposting.
Does a Craigslist post need to be verified?
Sometimes. Craigslist's verification page says "A posting may need to be verified before it will be published," by email or by phone. A post you never verified won't appear, so check your inbox, including spam, for the verification email.
Is a Craigslist phone verification code request a scam?
If it comes from anyone but Craigslist during posting, yes. Craigslist says it only asks for a phone code during the posting process, and that "Any other request for your phone code is a scam." A buyer asking you to read out a code is trying to take over your number.
Flagged and removed
What does flagged for removal mean?
Craigslist's flagging FAQ explains it: users flag postings they think break the rules, and "Free classified ads sufficiently flagged are subject to automated removal." Postings "may also be flagged for removal by CL staff or CL automated systems." It's community moderation first, with staff and automation alongside.
Why was my Craigslist post flagged for no reason?
Craigslist admits this happens: "no moderation system is perfect, and a small percentage of ads removed are compliant." It also says that "Millions of ads are removed by flagging monthly, nearly all of which violate the CL terms of use." So it's possible your post was flagged unfairly, but go through the removal reasons below before you assume so.
Can I repost a flagged Craigslist ad?
Yes, if it follows the rules. Craigslist says: "Flagged postings that comply with the TOU may be reposted, reworded as necessary." Fix whatever might have drawn the flags first, or the repost goes the same way.
Why was my Craigslist post flagged immediately?
Craigslist doesn't say how fast its automated systems act, so we can't give you a timing rule. A post removed within minutes is more likely to have tripped one of the published reasons, such as a duplicate, the wrong category or a $1 price, than to have collected reader flags that quickly.
Where can I get help with a flagged post?
Craigslist points users to its flag help forum, linked from the flagging FAQ, where other users look at a post and suggest what drew the flags.
Craigslist's own list of removal reasons
Craigslist publishes common reasons for posting removal. Here's each one, with what it usually looks like in a real post.
| Reason | Craigslist's rule | What trips it |
|---|---|---|
| Miscategorized | Post in the right category; services only under "services" | A business opportunity in "jobs", a dealer in "by owner" |
| Overposting | "no more than once every 48 hours" per item or offering | Reposting the same item every morning |
| Misleading | No keyword spamming, $1 prices on expensive items, hidden fees | A list of brand names in the description, a placeholder price |
| Not local | "the single geographic area closest to you or your item/offering" | The same post in several cities |
| Spam | No MLM, affiliate links, or signposts to other websites | "Visit our site for more" with a link |
| Personal info | No one else's names, addresses, emails or phone numbers | Naming a bad buyer in your post |
| Response | Replies to other ads go by email or the forums | A post answering someone else's post |
| Scalping | Tickets over face value "tend to get flagged for removal" | Resale tickets above face value |
| Illegal | Nothing connected to illegal activity | Anything prohibited, whatever the wording |
| Porn | No legally questionable images | Images that don't belong on a classifieds site |
How often can you post the same item on Craigslist?
Craigslist's rule is to post "each item/offering no more than once every 48 hours." If you're reposting daily to stay near the top, that's the likeliest reason your posts disappear.
Can I post in more than one city?
Craigslist asks you to "post only to the single geographic area closest to you or your item/offering." If the item is in Denver, Denver is the area. Posting the same ad in five nearby cities is the "not local" rule, and no connection, ours included, makes it compliant.
Why does my post keep getting removed from the wrong category?
Readers flag what doesn't belong, and Craigslist names category as its first removal reason. Brokers and dealers have their own categories where available, so a dealer posting "by owner" is a common case.
Ghosting: what it means and what people report
What does ghosted mean on Craigslist?
"Ghosted" is a user's word, not Craigslist's. It describes a post that shows as live in your account and in your own browser but never appears for anyone else. Craigslist's terms of use reserve the right to moderate "by blocking, filtering, re-categorizing, re-ranking" at its discretion, so silent filtering fits within what it says it can do. It just doesn't publish when or why.
How can you tell if your post is ghosted?
Search for it from a different device on a different connection, logged out, in the right area and category, using the exact title words. If it's past the delay, not held, verified, and still invisible there while it shows to you, it's behaving the way people describe ghosting.
What do users report causes ghosting?
These are reports, not Craigslist statements, and we can't confirm any of them from Craigslist's side. In an r/craigslist thread about not finding a listing, one commenter suggests flagged ads stay visible to the poster so scammers don't realise they've been removed. A JustAnswer expert answer mentions ads being held for moderation or treated as dealer listings because of keywords.
The most detailed list comes from AutoManager, which makes dealer listing software. Its help article on ghosted listings opens by saying Craigslist won't disclose how its filtering works and that most of what's known came from "trial and error". It then groups the causes it's seen into three families: content (special characters in the title, a missing price or location, unsupported HTML, too many links or images, unrelated keywords, mentions of shipping or non-cash payment), conduct (posting too quickly, too many listings from one account or one address), and connection.
What AutoManager says about connections
This part matters if you're thinking about buying a proxy, us included. AutoManager reports that Craigslist checks whether your IP looks local to the city you're posting to, that some ISPs, campus, hotel and other public connections are blocked, and that "Using a proxy or anonymizer" gets blocked because spammers abuse them. Its fix for a listing ghosted by IP is "a new, private internet connection from a reputable ISP that is local to the city that you want to post in."
Can Craigslist block your IP?
Its terms reserve blocking and filtering, and AutoManager reports IP-based ghosting from its dealers' experience. Craigslist doesn't say which addresses it filters or why. If you're on a VPN, a hotel or campus network, or an office line many businesses post from, it's plausible other people's posting history is attached to that address. That's what IP reputation means in practice, and a datacenter address is the easiest kind to recognise.
Is ghosting about the post or the account?
Craigslist doesn't say. The practical test is to change one thing at a time: rewrite the post first, because that costs nothing, and only then try a different connection. Change both at once and you'll never know which mattered.
Step by step: diagnosing a missing post
This order is our recommendation: cheapest checks first, the network last.
Step 1: wait an hour
Craigslist's own delay is "30 minutes or longer." Nothing else on this list is worth doing inside it.
Step 2: read the status in your account
Held, unverified, removed and active all mean different things. Most people skip this and start reposting, which makes things worse.
Step 3: verify if asked
Find the verification email or finish phone verification. An unverified post isn't published.
Step 4: search the way Craigslist searches
Right area, right category, exact words from your title, logged out, on a different device.
Step 5: check it against the removal reasons
Category, the 48-hour rule, misleading prices, keyword lists, links, other cities. If one applies, fix it.
Step 6: repost once, reworded
If the post complied, Craigslist allows a repost "reworded as necessary." Write it fresh rather than pasting the same text with one word changed, and keep to the 48-hour spacing.
Step 7: only then, look at the connection
If a compliant, reworded, verified post still never appears and others in the category do, try posting from a different, ordinary connection, such as your phone's own mobile data with Wi-Fi off. That's a free test, and it tells you whether the network is part of the problem. Our IP checker shows which address and network a site sees from you before you post.
Mistakes that make it worse
Reposting every few hours
It breaks the 48-hour rule directly, and each repost is another chance to be flagged.
Copying the same text into several cities
That's the "not local" rule and usually the overposting rule at once.
Keyword stuffing the description
A list of brands or search terms is "keyword spamming" in Craigslist's own removal list, and readers flag it.
Putting a $1 price on a real item
Craigslist names "expensive items listed at $1" as misleading. Use the real price.
Using a posting service or bot
Craigslist's terms bar third-party software or services that post for you. Besides breaking the terms, it puts your posts on whatever network and history the service has.
Changing everything at once
New text, new account, new connection, new category, all on the same day, and you'll never learn what fixed it or what broke it. The same goes for rotating an IP mid-test.
Paying to fix a content problem
A new IP won't save a post that breaks a published rule. Check the content first.
Where a different connection can help
Two situations, and both are narrower than proxy sellers usually admit. Keep AutoManager's report in mind throughout: by its account, proxies and anonymizers are a known cause of ghosting, and the connection it recommends is a private one from a reputable ISP local to the city you post in.
You post from a shared or crowded connection
VPNs, hosting addresses, residential pools and busy shared networks carry other people's history. If you've ruled out everything above, an ordinary connection that only you use removes that variable.
You post for several businesses from one office
If one office posts for several separate businesses, each in its own area, their accounts share an address that has nothing to do with each business. A separate line per business keeps one business's flags away from the others, the same idea as one line per client for agencies. It doesn't change the 48-hour rule or the one-area rule for any of them.
Which connection type fits
| Connection | What it looks like | Our view for Craigslist |
|---|---|---|
| Your own home line or phone data | An ordinary local subscriber | The right answer for almost everyone |
| Dedicated mobile line | A phone on a US carrier, shared with ordinary subscribers through CGNAT | A real carrier connection used by one customer; test it before relying on it |
| Residential pool | Someone's home address, rotated between customers | You don't know what was posted from it before you |
| VPN or datacenter | A hosting company's address | The type AutoManager reports as blocked |
Does a mobile proxy count as a proxy to Craigslist?
We can't promise it doesn't. A dedicated mobile line exits through a real US carrier, T-Mobile or Verizon, behind CGNAT like any phone, and nobody else posts from it (dedicated vs shared), which is the closest a proxy gets to the private ISP connection AutoManager recommends. But it's still a proxy, Craigslist doesn't publish what it detects, and we pick lines by state, not by city, so a local match isn't guaranteed. That's why the trial exists: post one compliant ad and see if it appears before you pay.
How many Craigslist accounts per IP?
Craigslist publishes no number. Our recommendation is one business per line, for the reason above. More on the reasoning in how many accounts per mobile proxy.
Where White Cloak fits
We sell dedicated US mobile proxies, so weigh this accordingly. Most missing Craigslist posts are fixed by the free steps above, and if yours is one of them, you don't need us. A line is worth it for a business that's ruled those out and needs a connection of its own, in the US state where it operates. Our Craigslist proxies page covers that setup, and you can test it on the free trial before paying.
A dedicated US carrier line in the state you choose, unlimited bandwidth, live within seconds of payment.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take for a post to show up on Craigslist?
Craigslist says it may take 30 minutes or longer for new posts to appear. Posts held for manual review take longer, and are generally top-posted once approved.
Why is my Craigslist post not showing up in search?
Check the area and category, and search with the exact words from your title. Craigslist only uses exact matching in searches. If it still doesn't appear, check whether it's held, unverified or removed in your account.
What does it mean when a Craigslist post is on hold?
It's being held temporarily for manual review by Craigslist staff. Reload the post to check its status instead of reposting.
Why did my post get removed on Craigslist?
Usually one of Craigslist's published reasons: wrong category, posting the same item more than once every 48 hours, misleading prices or keywords, posting outside your area, spam links, or reader flags.
Can I repost a flagged Craigslist ad?
Yes, if it follows the terms of use. Craigslist says compliant flagged postings may be reposted, reworded as necessary.
What does ghosted mean on Craigslist?
It's a user term for a post that looks live to you but doesn't appear to anyone else. Craigslist doesn't define it, though its terms reserve the right to block, filter, re-categorize and re-rank postings.
Can Craigslist ghost you because of your IP address?
Craigslist doesn't publish how it filters. AutoManager, a dealer-software vendor, reports that Craigslist checks whether an IP looks local to the posting city and blocks some ISPs, public networks, proxies and anonymizers. Rule out the content rules first, then test a different ordinary connection.
How often can you post on Craigslist?
Craigslist asks you to post each item or offering no more than once every 48 hours, in the single area closest to you or the item.
Can I post the same ad in multiple cities on Craigslist?
No. Craigslist asks you to post only to the single geographic area closest to you or your item, and lists posting outside it as a removal reason.
How long do Craigslist posts stay up?
Free postings stay live for between 7 and 45 days depending on the type of posting, and paid postings for 30 days.
