How to Manage Multiple Telegram Accounts (2026)

Yes, you can run multiple Telegram accounts, and Telegram supports it in the app: each account needs its own phone number, and one Telegram app can hold several of them at once, switched from the side menu. For a work account and a personal one, that's the whole answer, and you don't need a proxy.

What gets Telegram accounts limited isn't the IP address. It's people pressing "Report spam", and phone numbers Telegram already distrusts, including "certain virtual/VOIP numbers" in its own words. No network setup changes either of those. A separate IP only earns its place when one team runs accounts for several different clients and wants them kept apart.

What Telegram allows

Is it allowed to have multiple Telegram accounts?

Yes. Telegram's own FAQ suggests it for people with two numbers: "You may create another Telegram account on the second number as well, for example, if you want to keep work and personal chats separated." Its Terms of Service don't limit how many accounts you have. They forbid what you do with them: spam, scams, illegal content and data scraping.

How many Telegram accounts can you have?

Telegram doesn't publish a cap on total accounts, so we won't invent one. The number it has published is per app: its 2017 announcement says you can add "up to three accounts with different phone numbers" to one Telegram app. Past that, a second device or a second app is the usual route.

Does each Telegram account need its own phone number?

Yes, and it's the rule that shapes everything else. Telegram's FAQ puts it in one line: "Each phone number is a separate account on Telegram." Two accounts means two numbers. The number is the login, the recovery route and, as the spam section below shows, part of how Telegram judges a new account.

Can one Telegram account run on several devices?

Yes. Telegram says you can log in "from as many of your devices as you like, all at the same time", and cloud chats sync between them. That's the opposite problem to most of this page: one account in many places is normal, many accounts in one place is the part to plan.

Does Telegram Premium cover all your accounts?

No. The Premium FAQ says "Each account requires its own subscription", and one Google or Apple account supports one ongoing subscription at a time. It also says Premium gets no "special treatment" if an account breaks the rules.

How to add a second Telegram account

On Android

  1. Open the side menu (the three lines at the top left).
  2. Tap the arrow next to your name, then "Add Account".
  3. Enter the second phone number and the login code Telegram sends.
  4. Switch between accounts from the same menu. Each one keeps its own chats and notifications.

On iPhone

Go to Settings, tap Edit at the top right, then "Add Another Account", and log in with the second number. Once it's added, you switch between accounts from Settings. The same three-account ceiling per app applies.

On a computer

Telegram's FAQ says one Telegram app can hold "several different accounts at once", and that covers the desktop apps too. Telegram Web is a separate login in your browser. A practical split for teams is one account in the desktop app and another in a browser profile, so both stay open side by side.

Can you have two Telegram accounts open at the same time?

Inside one app, you see one account at a time and get notifications for all of them. To have two on screen at once, use two places: the phone and the desktop app, or the desktop app and a browser profile on Telegram Web.

Moving a number that already has an account

Telegram won't put two accounts on one number. Its FAQ says that if a different Telegram account already exists on the number you're moving to, "you'll need to delete that account first." Plan the numbers before you plan anything else.

Why new Telegram accounts get limited

This is the part most multi-account guides skip, and it's the one Telegram documents best. Its Spam FAQ describes the whole process, and none of it is about IP addresses.

What does "limited" mean on Telegram?

When people press "Report spam" on your messages, moderators review them, and if they agree, the account is "limited temporarily". A limited account can still message people who have its number saved as a contact, and it can always reply to anyone who writes first. What it loses is the ability to start conversations with strangers.

How long does a Telegram spam limit last?

Telegram says a first offence usually means a limit of "a few days or so", unless you're "an industrial scale spammer". Repeat offences get longer limits, and an account that keeps messaging strangers "may lose the ability to do so forever."

Why is my brand-new Telegram account already limited?

Telegram answers this one directly: "Some numbers may trigger an overly harsh response from our system, either due to their previous owners' activities or due to them being certain virtual/VOIP numbers." A recycled number or a cheap virtual one can arrive limited before you've sent a message. That's a number problem, and a proxy doesn't touch it.

How do you appeal a Telegram limit?

Through @SpamBot inside Telegram. The Spam FAQ points both wrongly limited users and new accounts on troubled numbers there. It's also clear that a fair limit won't be lifted early: "We're sorry, but this is impossible."

What gets accounts reported in the first place?

Telegram says that for private messages "it really doesn't matter what you send, as long as the receivers find it unwelcome", even a plain hello. Groups get more leeway, but unsolicited ads there are limited too. The pattern is simple: messages people didn't ask for.

Telegram doesn't publish how it connects accounts, and nobody outside Telegram knows how it weighs each signal. What we can do is list what any service sees when you log in, and say plainly which of those a proxy changes. Only one of them.

The phone number

On Telegram the number is the account, so it's the strongest link there is. It also carries history: a number's previous owner can be the reason a new account starts out limited. No proxy changes it.

The device and the app

Three accounts in one Telegram app sit on one device, by Telegram's own design. That's fine for one person's accounts. It also means the app knows they're together, so treat accounts in one app as one owner's set.

The IP address

Every service sees the address you connect from. Accounts on one home or office connection share it, which is normal for households and teams. A proxy changes this signal and only this one.

Contacts you sync

Telegram uses your phone contacts to show who's on Telegram, and its FAQ describes deleting synced contacts as a privacy setting. Several accounts syncing the same address book share that, whatever network they're on.

Payments and Premium

Premium is per account and one app-store account runs one subscription at a time. Paying for several accounts from one card or one Apple ID puts the same payment detail on all of them. A proxy doesn't hide a card.

Behaviour

Accounts that join the same groups in the same minute, post the same link, or forward each other's messages look related to any group admin, before any system gets involved. It's also exactly what earns spam reports. This is the signal that matters most in practice, and it's entirely in your hands.

Telegram's built-in proxy settings

Unlike most apps, Telegram has its own proxy setting, so you don't need extra software to use one. Its proxy page lists where to find it:

AppWhere the proxy setting is
AndroidSettings > Data and Storage > Proxy Settings (bottom of the page)
iPhoneSettings > Data and Storage > Proxy (bottom of the page)
Telegram DesktopSettings > Advanced > Connection Type
Telegram for macOSSettings > Data and Storage > Use Proxy

SOCKS5 or MTProto: which one do you want?

For a commercial proxy, SOCKS5. Telegram says SOCKS5 needs a server and port, with an optional username and password, and that's the format a dedicated line comes in. MTProto proxies take a server, port and secret, and Telegram built MTProxy for a different job: it "allows users to circumvent internet censorship". Some apps also accept HTTP proxies, Telegram adds, but SOCKS5 is the type its apps generally support. Here's why SOCKS5 matters on mobile proxies.

Why do I see a strange channel after connecting to a proxy?

That's an MTProto proxy's sponsor channel. Telegram lets MTProxy operators show a promoted channel to offset their server costs, and says the operator can't see your chats. It doesn't happen on a SOCKS5 line you pay for.

Does one proxy setting cover every account in the app?

The setting lives in the app's Data and Storage or Advanced menu, not in an account's profile, so our working assumption is that every account in that install goes out through the same proxy. If two accounts need different IPs, put them in different places: separate devices, or the desktop app and a browser profile each with its own connection.

What does "Auto-Switch Proxies" do?

With several proxies saved, Telegram can move to the next one when the current one drops. Handy for staying online, but it means your account can change address mid-session. For accounts you care about, one stable line beats a list that hops.

Do you need a proxy for multiple Telegram accounts?

Probably not. Here's how we'd decide, case by case.

Work and personal accounts: no

Two numbers, one app, your normal connection. This is the exact case Telegram's FAQ describes, and an extra IP adds nothing.

Channel admins and group moderators: no

Running a channel or moderating a group from a separate account is common. It's still you, and the built-in account switching handles it.

Developers building a bot: no

Telegram has a Bot API for automation, and bots are created through @BotFather rather than a phone number. A user account driven by a script is a different thing, and a proxy doesn't make bulk automation of user accounts acceptable.

An agency running accounts for several clients: maybe

This is the one case where a separate connection per client is reasonable. Ten client support or community accounts logging in from one office network share an address for reasons that have nothing to do with each client, and one client's spam reports then sit next to everyone else's. Giving each client its own stable IP keeps that separation clean. It doesn't change the rules each account has to follow.

Mass messaging or scraping: no, and nothing here helps

Telegram's terms forbid spam and data scraping, and its spam system runs on reports from the people you message. A new IP doesn't change who presses the button, and we won't sell a line for it.

Setting up several client accounts, step by step

This is our recommended setup for a team that's decided separation is worth it. None of it is a Telegram requirement beyond the one-number-per-account rule.

Step 1: one real phone number per account

Use numbers you control and can keep, on a real carrier plan. Telegram names virtual and VOIP numbers as a cause of new accounts being limited, so the cheapest number is often the most expensive one. Write down which number belongs to which account and client.

Step 2: turn on 2-Step Verification

Telegram recommends it in Settings > Privacy and Security > 2-Step Verification, with a recovery email. On shared team accounts, this is what stops one leaked login code from costing you the account. Telegram also supports passkeys if your devices do.

Step 3: one place per client

Keep each client's accounts in their own app install, device or browser profile, never mixed with another client's in one app. That keeps chats, contacts and notifications apart, and it's what makes a separate IP per client possible at all.

Step 4: give each client's place its own connection

Add that client's SOCKS5 line in the app's proxy setting, or in the browser profile for Telegram Web, with its username and password. Check the address on our IP checker from the same device before you log in.

Step 5: keep each account's IP stable

Don't rotate the address under a logged-in account, and leave Auto-Switch off for these. An account that hops between locations every few minutes looks stranger than one that stays put. Rotation is for starting fresh, and how to rotate a mobile proxy IP covers when it helps.

Step 6: keep client accounts out of each other's groups

Client A's account forwarding client B's channel posts, or joining the same groups on the same day, undoes the separation you just built. Each account should only do that client's work.

Step 7: log in regularly

Telegram deletes accounts that don't come online for 18 months by default, and you can change that period in Settings. A client account that's only used for an annual campaign needs a calendar reminder, or a longer self-destruct setting.

A first two weeks for a new account

Telegram doesn't publish a warm-up period, so this is our recommendation. The aim is simple: don't give anyone a reason to press "Report spam" while the account has no history.

Mistakes that get Telegram accounts limited

Cold-messaging people found by username

Telegram says outright that username search isn't for making new friends. Every unexpected DM is one tap from a report, and reports are what moderators act on.

Signing up on a cheap virtual number

Telegram's Spam FAQ names "certain virtual/VOIP numbers" as a reason new accounts arrive limited. A number that's already been through a dozen sign-ups carries that history with it.

Adding people to groups they didn't ask to join

Telegram lists adding people to unwanted groups and channels alongside unwanted messages. It's the same complaint, and the same report button.

Posting the same promotion everywhere

Group admins can report users who spam their groups. One identical link dropped into ten groups in an hour is the textbook case, however many accounts it's spread across.

Buying accounts or recycled numbers

A bought account comes with someone else's history, and Telegram says a number's "previous owners' activities" can trigger limits. Accounts you can't recover, on numbers you don't control, aren't assets.

Mixing clients in one app

Three clients' accounts in one Telegram app share a device and, if you've set one, a proxy. Keep each client in its own place.

Letting proxies hop under a live session

Auto-Switch Proxies and rotating lines both change the address under an account. Keep one stable IP per account, which is what a sticky session is for.

Skipping 2-Step Verification on shared accounts

A login code read out over a team call is how shared accounts get taken over. 2-Step Verification and a recovery email on every account, recorded where the team can find them.

Which IP type, and how many accounts per IP

Telegram publishes no accounts-per-IP limit, and the numbers below are our advice, not its rules. For the general reasoning, see how many accounts per mobile proxy.

ConnectionWhat it looks likeOur view for Telegram
Your home or office lineAn ordinary subscriberRight for personal accounts and a single brand
Dedicated mobile lineA phone on a US carrier, shared with ordinary subscribers through CGNATReasonable for one client's accounts per line
Residential poolSomeone's home address, rotated between customersWorkable, but you don't know who used it before you
Datacenter or VPNA hosting company's addressFine for reading; a weak fit for accounts you care about
Free MTProto proxyA stranger's server, built for getting around censorshipNot for business accounts: you don't know the operator

How many Telegram accounts per proxy would we run?

Our recommendation: one client's accounts per line, which in practice means one to three, matching what one app holds. Mobile carriers already put many subscribers behind each address through CGNAT, so a few accounts on one mobile IP is ordinary. Mixing clients on one line defeats the point of having it.

Does Telegram block VPNs or proxies?

No. Telegram says all its mobile and desktop apps can connect through a proxy, and publishes the instructions itself. What a shared address can bring is other people's history, which is IP reputation, and why datacenter addresses and residential pools carry more unknowns than a dedicated IP.

Where White Cloak fits

We sell dedicated US mobile proxies, so weigh this accordingly: most people reading this page don't need one. Work and personal accounts, channel admins and bot developers are all covered by Telegram's own features. Where a line earns its cost is an agency or community team running accounts for several clients that shouldn't share an office network. If that's you, mobile proxies for social media agencies covers the wider setup, and you can test one on the free trial. Each line comes with SOCKS5 credentials that drop straight into Telegram's proxy setting.

Give each client's Telegram accounts their own dedicated US carrier IP, with SOCKS5 and HTTP credentials issued instantly.

Frequently asked questions

Is it allowed to have multiple Telegram accounts?

Yes. Telegram's FAQ suggests a second account on a second number to keep work and personal chats apart. Its terms forbid spam, scams and data scraping, not having more than one account.

How many Telegram accounts can I have on one phone?

Telegram's announcement of the feature says one app holds up to three accounts, each with a different phone number. It doesn't publish a cap on total accounts.

Is it possible to have two Telegram accounts with the same phone number?

No. Telegram's FAQ says each phone number is a separate account, and a number that already has an account has to have that account deleted before it can be used for another.

Can I create multiple Telegram accounts without a phone number?

Telegram user accounts are tied to phone numbers, one account per number. Bots are the exception: they're created through @BotFather and don't need a number.

Can I have two Telegram accounts on my iPhone?

Yes. Go to Settings, tap Edit, then Add Another Account, and log in with the second number. You can switch between them from Settings.

How do I use multiple Telegram accounts on PC?

Add accounts in Telegram Desktop's settings, or keep one account in the desktop app and another in Telegram Web in your browser so both are open at once.

Why is my new Telegram account limited?

Telegram's Spam FAQ says some numbers trigger a harsh response because of their previous owners' activity or because they're certain virtual or VOIP numbers. You can explain your case to @SpamBot.

How long does a Telegram spam limit last?

Telegram says a first limit usually lasts a few days or so. Repeat offences get longer limits, and a limited account can still message its contacts and reply to anyone who writes first.

Can Telegram tell if two accounts use the same IP?

Every service sees the IP you connect from, so accounts on one connection share that detail. Households and offices share IPs all the time, and Telegram publishes no rule against it.

Does Telegram support proxies?

Yes. Telegram says all its mobile and desktop apps can connect through a proxy, generally SOCKS5 or MTProto. On Android and iPhone it's under Settings, Data and Storage; on Telegram Desktop it's under Advanced, Connection Type.

Do I need a proxy for multiple Telegram accounts?

Usually not. Work and personal accounts, channel admins and bot developers don't need one. A separate IP per client is reasonable for an agency running accounts for several clients from one office.
