Proxy authentication
Proxy authentication is how a proxy server verifies that you are allowed to use it, normally either with a username and password or by checking your own IP against a whitelist.
Proxy authentication is how a proxy server verifies that you are allowed to use it, normally either with a username and password sent when you connect, or by checking your own IP address against a whitelist the provider holds. Without it, anyone who learned the host and port could use your bandwidth and your IP.
The two methods
- Username and password. Portable — the same credentials work from a laptop, a server, or a phone, wherever you happen to be. Supported by browsers, scrapers, and by SOCKS5 as part of its handshake.
- IP whitelisting. You register the address you will connect from and the proxy accepts anything arriving from it. Nothing to leak, but it breaks the moment your own address changes — which for most home connections is regularly.
Why it matters when you buy proxies
Treat proxy credentials as a password, because that is what they are: anyone holding them sends traffic from your IP, and everything they do lands on your IP reputation. Do not paste them into shared documents or public scripts.
A concrete example
With White Cloak, credentials are generated automatically once payment confirms and appear in your dashboard within seconds — a username and password for the HTTP/HTTPS endpoint and another for the SOCKS5 endpoint. You paste the host, port, username and password into whatever tool you are configuring, and that is the whole setup.
Related terms
SOCKS5
SOCKS5 is a proxy protocol that forwards raw network traffic between you and a destination without interpreting it, which lets it carry any kind of connection rather than just web requests.
Proxy port
A proxy port is the number you connect to alongside the proxy's host address — the 8080 in 1.2.3.4:8080 — and it tells the proxy server which of its services should handle your connection.
Dedicated IP
A dedicated IP is an address assigned to one customer at a time, so nobody else's traffic leaves through it while it is yours.
White Cloak Proxy sells dedicated 5G mobile proxies on real handsets — unlimited bandwidth, one customer per device, HTTP and SOCKS5 credentials in seconds.
